![]() ![]() Tragedy in York displayed strong community in town 4/19/99 There are some tragedies in life that defy the power of words. Such was the case last week, when the entire region was rocked by the freak accident that claimed the life of York third-grader Matthew Cruz, and seriously injured his classmate, Samuel Briggs. The fallen tree limb that brought Matthew's life to such an abrupt end took away a bright light in the eyes of family, friends and all who knew the young man. It also served to remind us of the incredibly random nature of life, how precious it can be, how quickly and unexpectedly it can end, and how important it is that we cherish every minute we have with our loved ones. The tragedy of Matthew's death also reinforced the notion of community. Family, friends _ even total strangers _ were there for support when needed, but never intrusive. The staff at York Village Elementary School handled the situation as best as they could on the day of the emergency, and responded well with counseling and information for parents after the fact. Police and emergency rescue personnel were quick to the scene, and did everything humanly possible. The family of Matthew Cruz was a profile in courage throughout the event, thrown into the midst of a deeply personal tragedy that unfolded in full glare of the public spotlight. Their strength was an inspiration to all. The Rev. Albert Colpitts, who eulogized the much-loved 8-year-old boy, reminded us as best as he could that, "Matthew is safe, and he prays for us today." Memorial donations may be made to the Matthew E. Cruz Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Kennebunk Savings Bank, Box 39, York, 03909.
