Beaten child not expected to survive

MILFORD, Mass. (AP) A 19-month-old girl who was severely beaten, allegedly for crying, was hospitalized Saturday and is not expected to live, according to Worcester District Attorney John J. Conte.
Richard Gamache, 29, was arrested Saturday morning in connection with the beating of Sarah Salvi, Conte said.
The alleged beating happened about 3 a.m. Friday at the home where Gamache was reportedly living with the child's mother, Rowene Salvi, 26.
Police said Salvi had left home to deliver newspapers just before the beating.
The child was initially taken to MetroWest Hospital in Framingham, Conte said, and was later transferred to Children's Hospital in Boston, where she is on life support. He said the child was not expected to survive.
Conte said the ''very severe beating'' came after the baby had been crying. The child was thrown down, shaken and struck, suffering multiple injuries, he said.
Gamache is charged with assault with intent to murder and domestic assault and battery, he said. Gamache was being held yesterday without bail at the Milford Police Department.
Conte said the child had been taken to MetroWest Hospital earlier in the week with bruises. He did not elaborate.
State police attached to the district attorney's office and Milford police investigated.
