Sally Ann Benway, a resident of Dover, graduate of Spaulding High School in Rochester and a student at the Stratham Campus of NH Community Technical College was named New Century Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) the national honor society for two-year colleges. Benway won the title for receiving the highest All-USA Academic Team score among applicants from New Hampshire. She received a $2000 scholarship and represented the State in the opening ceremonies at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) convention in April in Long Beach.
Benway earned an Associate of Science Degree in Veterinary Technology in 2004 at NHCTC-Stratham and is now a dual major 2006 candidate for Associate of Science in Management and Accounting. She served as NHCTC-Stratham Chapter Vice President and President of the PTK, President of Kappa Beta Delta National Honor Society for Business Studies and Student Representative to the NH Community College System Board of Trustees.
Brian M. Manougian, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Crowell of Rye, and Mark Manougian of Swanzey, graduated com laude fromAllegheny College on May 14. A graduate of Portsmouth High School, Manougian received a bachelor of science degree in psychology.
While a student at Allegheny, Manougian was a member of the men’s soccer team, Psi Chi, and participated in Relay for Life. Manougian was also named an Alden Scholar his sophomore and junior years.
Fernando Hyon Serna Jr., the son of Fernando and Yong Serna of Portsmouth, was recently awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), in Boston, Mass.
Serna earned his undergraduate degree in Human Physiology from Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
After completing a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery, Serna hopes to complete a fellowship and pursue a career in academic Orthopaedic Surgery, allowing him to perform research and teach while fulfilling his clinical duties.
Jen Chapman of Kittery, Maine, was one of several students recognized at a recent Honors Convocation held at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. Chapman received the Pearl Setzer Deal Playmaker Award, given annually to the junior or senior who is judged to have displayed the most loyalty, cooperation and exemplary conduct and attitude during two or more years of service in all aspects of playmaking.
Robert Wheeler, a continuing education adjunct instructor at Southern New Hampshire University’s Portsmouth Seacoast Center was awarded the 2006 SNHU Excellence in Teaching Award.
The New Castle resident teaches writing, and his passion for Ernest Hemingway has turned his course into one of the center’s more popular classes. This past February, Wheeler took 10 students from his Hemingway’s Paris Years class and spent six days in France retracing the American author’s steps, including a trip to Normandy.
The annual teaching award recognizes a full-time faculty member and a community faculty member who exemplify those qualities that set the university apart as a teaching institution: effectiveness as a classroom teacher, commitment to students through advising and tutoring, professional development, contributions toward building the reputation or image of the university, impact on graduates as viewed by alumni and general attitude toward students that demonstrates concern for their welfare.
